In a previous post, Pain At The Desk, we saw how sitting down affects your hip flexors. I know when I sit at the computer too long, I tighten up very quickly, and after a long flight from Down Under to Europe I. There are quite a few muscles that actually flex the hip, but two that are specifically referred to as hip flexors. The Illiopsoas group consists of the Psoas and the Iliacus. Both attach to the femur. However the psoas attaches to the lower back, whereas the Iliacus attaches to your hipbone. Sitting down puts these muscles in a shortened position, and as a result leaves them pretty tight. The Psoas attaches to the lower back, if it. A tight hip flexor will also go a long way to inhibiting your bum, which means whatever work you are doing for it, you probably aren. No bum means you are susceptible to many more injuries, and have a lack of power in simple things such as walking. What Can I Do To Loosen Them? Well, there are a couple of ways to get these babies loose again. Massage, Acupuncture, Foam Rolling, Self Massage are all great ways to loosen up your hip flexors. These should always be accompanied with strength exercises and hip flexor stretches. Exercises. When you think of loosening a muscle, stretching automatically comes to mind. However, you can also loosen your hip flexors through exercises. It works by taking your muscles through their range of motion dynamically. I have a lot more exercises to do at home you can check out. Overhead Lunges. This is possibly the best exercise you can do for opening up your hip flexors. It is basically a normal lunge, but you hold a medicine ball, or a light plate above your head. Out stretch your arms, keep them straight, directly above your head, and complete the lunges. You have something that is called fascia; it. Your fascia is a big issue in hip flexor tightness, and often when that is loosened, the muscle is too. Holding something above your head whilst lunging stretches this fascia out, and you get the added hip flexor stretch. Reverse Lunges. Same as a forward lunge, but done in reverse! When you step back into the reverse lunge, you are recruiting your bum. Recruiting your bum inhibits your hip flexors, meaning they will relax. Stepping back straight away puts the hip flexors on stretch, and as you do the exercise, you take them through a large range of motion. Overhead Squat. Performing a squat whilst holding a bar overhead, opens up your hip area, and promotes hip flexor range of motion. When most people attempt this to start, the lower they get, the more they will want to bend forward. If you picture the hip flexors, they attach from the upper thigh, onto the lower back, if these are tight, as you try to get lower, your hip flexors will pull you forward. By holding the bar above your head, you have to stay up straight, basically lengthening your hip flexors during a dynamic movement. Read more about the overhead squat here. Hip Flexor Stretches. Stretching is an obvious and essential way to loosen those babies. I often make up stretches just trying to pin point an area. Basically you get down on one knee, stretch your arms up, then try and touch your opposite hand to opposite foot behind you. Check these pictures to aid my terrible explanation. There are many variants of hip flexor stretches. That one is just my favourite. This video shows you a few more. If you have tight hip flexors and suffer from hip pain, start adding these exercises and stretches into your workout, and you will see a difference. Being able to stretch your hip flexors will loosen them a lot, but taking it one step further and releasing them manually will be even more effective. Use a combination of the two and you can’t go wrong. Hitting your Hip Flexors isn’t the easiest task, and takes a few little tricks. If you have a tennis ball at home, then you have the tools. Lying on your stomach, you can place the tennis ball directly under your Psoas, which you will find about 1. It helps to raise the ball up with a book, or something substituting as a block. I told her that the exposure wasn’t worth it to me, that I’m an honest person and I didn’t feel like the story was letting me be honest if I couldn’t share that photo. I told her that if their policy was to have fully clothed people, then they needed to do that with the rest of the site as well. She said she understood and that was that. The whole thing still really frustrates me because I don’t feel like my body was given the same respect as others on their site. Why all of the sudden is it their policy to have fully clothed people? The reporter stated that she wasn’t sure if someone had complained about the previous photos to Shape or not. But in my eyes if someone is complaining about them featuring women in bikinis, then again they shouldn’t have them anywhere on the site. If anything, the should want my picture on their site. My body is real, not photoshopped or hidden because I feel like I should be ashamed. This is a body after losing 1. AMAZING in a freaking bikini. This is the type of body they should have featured because it can give people hope. Hope that they can lose weight healthfully and even if they don’t end up with airbrushed abs of steel, they’re gorgeous and shouldn’t be ashamed of whatever imperfection they believe they have. Women today are exposed SO MUCH to what society sees as the ideal body. The perfect hourglass shape with no arm flab, a thigh gap, full lips, perfect breasts, and a flat tummy. We believe from the time we are little girls that to be beautiful we must have these things. If we’re not the ideal beautiful, then we should be ashamed and not feel like we are good enough. I spent MANY years hating and hiding a body I was ashamed of because it wasn’t society’s ideal of beautiful. Being asked to send a photo of myself with a shirt on made me feel like I again should be ashamed of my body. That since I have the loose skin, I shouldn’t be in a bikini. I wasn’t willing to do that though. I’ve always been real and honest with you guys around here. If I couldn’t have the picture of me in my bikini to go along with my story, then it wasn’t MY story. The story I wanted to tell and shout out to the world, not their ideal story. So, if I couldn’t tell it my way, then they weren’t going to be able to tell it at all. I was raised to stand up for what I believe in and I believe that if a website posts pictures of women in bikinis, then I should be given that same right. I wasn’t given that, so I decided to decline. Like I said before, the exposure I would have gotten wasn’t worth it to me. Nothing is worth compromising my beliefs. Here's Why. You’ve finally made it past the point of wanting to get healthy and lose weight. You’ve not only made plans for eating better and working out, but you actually put those plans into action. It’s been a month now, and not only have you not lost any weight, but you’ve actually gained some! Why? At the end of the article I’m going to give you access to the personal. This weight gain is good weight gain, and it will do nothing to keep you from reaching your goals as long as you understand what is actually going on. Increased Energy Reserve Capacity. Let’s assume that your calorie intake isn’t 5. This is a safe assumption to make, as most weight losers don’t come anywhere close to eating maintenance calories. In fact, they tend to under eat. So if your calories are below maintenance levels, how could you possibly be gaining weight – especially if you’ve been exercising too? Your body stores energy in two main forms. Fat storage is fairly linear – meaning it fluctuates slowly based on your current lifestyle. However, glycogen storage can swing wildly on a day to day basis depending on the type of exercise you do, the amount you do, the composition of your diet, and how long it’s been since you’ve done any exercise. Glycogen Storage. Glycogen = Glucose + Water. Your body. Taking that one step further, the average person can store about 1. So, let’s do a little math: A 2. At 1. 5 g/kg, that person carries 1. That’s right, 3 pounds of glycogen is what this person stores on average. If he were going from a sedentary lifestyle to a very active one, the swing in water weight could be several pounds. Going From a Sedentary to an Active Lifestyle Results in Initial Weight Gain. This is the biggest reason people see stagnant weight loss or even weight gain at the beginning of a weight loss program. They go from a sedentary lifestyle to one that is much more active. This transition causes many changes in your body. Going from doing hardly any exercise. Your body needs more fuel, and it adapts by storing more of the carbohydrates you eat as glycogen in your muscle. So when you first start a weight loss program you very well could be. You very easily could have lost one pound of fat the first week but gained one or more pounds of muscle glycogen. Then, you step on the scale, see no change in weight (or possibly a gain), and think all your hard work was for nothing. Sound familiar? Weight and Fat Are Not the Same. You might think that is an obvious statement, but if it were, there wouldn’t be so many people wondering why they’re working out but gaining weight. This weight is good weight. It is fuel within the muscles for high- intensity exercise. It is going to make your muscles look full. Fat is plain and simple – fat. This is the reason why your weight fluctuates so much on a day- to- day basis. Being that your body is made up of 6. Fat loss is much more linear and stable. Keep this in mind when you step on the scale. The number can be deceiving. Be Prepared For Some Weight Gain. It can sometimes take 2- 4 weeks before the scale starts ticking downwards, especially if you haven’t been working out consistently. Body composition changes are occurring, they just aren’t being reflected on the scale. Not to mention, you are definitely healthier than when you started. Pay attention to other progress markers too – how your clothes fit, the mirror, strength, confidence, improved body image, improved blood pressure, reduced stress, etc. In the end, these progress markers are more important anyways. If they improve over weeks and months, the side effect will be weight loss. Be patient and trust the process. Your body is changing from the inside out. It’s always just a lack of a caloric deficit, potentially caused by everything from an ineffective diet/workout program, to a lack of compliance on an effective diet/workout program, to unknowingly underestimating intake, overestimating output, or just flat out miscalculating or. So that’s the only real reason why a person will be unable to lose weight. However, there are still scenarios that can and do occur in which a person will successfully be losing weight but. And I think you get the idea. Which is that? Because while your body weight is a very useful tool for tracking your progress. Especially in scenarios like these. This is because your body weight can and DOES change from one day to the next (or even one hour to the next) as a result of a loss or gain in muscle, fat, water, glycogen, poop, food intake and more. That means daily fluctuations in body weight (plus extra monthly fluctuations for women) are extremely common and normal. And they’re constantly taking place without your knowledge. Which means it’s possible. So it’s not that you can’t lose weight in these cases, it’s just that you’re doing a poor job of seeing that it’s happening. So how do you prevent this? Always weigh yourself first thing in the morning on an empty stomach before eating or drinking (but after peeing), and wear the same amount of clothing (ideally very little) every time. Weigh in daily. This is key. Have 2- 4 weeks worth of accurate data before assuming, worrying or adjusting. So none of this “I was losing weight fine on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday but now on Thursday my weight has stalled” bullshit. Or telling me your weight loss has stalled, I ask for how long, and you say something like “1 week.” Nah, it doesn’t work like that. Instead, wait until you have 2- 4 weeks worth of weekly averages to compare before assuming. For example, if you consume an above- average amount of sodium today, you should expect an above- average amount of water retention tomorrow, and thus a temporarily above- average body weight. Of course, the previous points (only paying attention to the weekly average over the span of 2- 4 weeks) will go pretty far in preventing this sort of thing from making any meaningful dent in your tracking. Measurements can help, too. So if your weight from one week to the next happens to be the same, but various measurements have slightly decreased, it’s a good sign that things are still moving in the right direction (and for one reason or another, it’s just not showing up on the scale yet). I should however mention that measurements come with their own accuracy warnings. For example, you could put the tape measure around your stomach and have it be just slightly less- straight than you had it last time, and that tiny difference could throw the measurement off by a full inch. Meaning, if you’re following these guidelines, weighing in as accurately as possible, and yet still find that 3, 4, 5+ weeks are passing without any weight being lost? You’re just not in a deficit. The dominant follicle prevents the other follicles from maturing further, so they stop growing and die. When estrogen levels are high enough and your egg is mature, a luteinizing hormone (LH) is released. This is known as your LH surge (which is what ovulation predictor kits measure). Ovulation. Within 2. LH surge, ovulation takes place. The mature egg bursts out if its follicle, and the finger- like ends of the fallopian tube (called the fimbriae) capture the egg and sweep it into the tube. The unfertilized egg makes its way down the fallopian tube and into the uterus. The egg will only survive 1. Luteal Phase. The luteal phase begins immediately after ovulation. After the egg is released, the ruptured follicle develops into a structure called the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum will begin to produce a hormone called progesterone – which begins to thicken the lining of your uterus to prepare your body for implantation. If your partner’s sperm fertilizes the egg, the fertilized egg (now called an embryo) will implant itself into your uterine lining. If this happens, you’re pregnant! If fertilization doesn’t take place, the egg dissolves and your hormonal levels will decrease. Your uterine lining will break down and be shed during menstruation (your period). And only one lucky sperm will be able to penetrate the outer layer of the egg and fertilize it. Detecting Ovulation. Because ovulation is vital to conception, you will want to know when you might be ovulating. For women with average 2. For best results, you should take your temperature at the same time every morning, before you get out of bed. Getting up, walking around, or going to the bathroom before taking your temperature can throw off your results. Be patient – it may take several months before you start to recognize a pattern in your temperatures. Use this information to help you predict when you may be ovulating during the month. More Cervical Discharge. The consistency and amount of cervical mucus that you produce will change throughout your menstrual cycle. During your infertile periods, you may be feeling quite dry and uncomfortable. As you approach ovulation, you may have moist or sticky cervical discharge that is white or creamy in color.
